لم تُشخص إصابة جو بايدن بسرطان البروستات قبل الأسبوع الماضي، كما أنه سبق وأجرى تحليل دم للكشف عن المرض قبل 11 عاماً، حسبما أعلنت متحدثة باسم الرئيس الأميركي السابق أمس الثلاثاء.
وجاء بيان مكتب بايدن بعدما أثار خلفه الرئيس دونالد ترمب مزاعم بوجود تستر قائلاً إنه “فوجئ” لعدم إطلاع الرأي العام في شأن السرطان خلال وقت سابق.
وأعلن مكتب بايدن الأحد الماضي أن الرئيس السابق (82 سنة) جرى تشخيص إصابته بنوع عدواني من سرطان البروستات، بعد أيام من اكتشاف عقدة في الغدة.
و”يعود آخر فحص ‘بي إس إيه’ أو ‘مستضد البروستات النوعي’ معروف للرئيس بايدن لعام 2014″، على ما قالت متحدثة باسمه في بيان لوكالة الصحافة الفرنسية، وفحص الدم هذا يستخدم للكشف الباكر عن السرطان، مضيفة أنه “قبل يوم الجمعة لم تشخص إصابة الرئيس بايدن بسرطان البروستات”.
ويمكن اكتشاف سرطان البروستات، وهو الأكثر شيوعاً لدى الرجال، خلال مراحله الباكرة باستخدام فحوص الدم التي تقيس بروتين “بي إس إيه”.
وكثيراً ما انتقد ترمب الجمهوري خصمه الديمقراطي في بشأن صحته ومعرفته الإدراكية، كما أثار وحلفاؤه تساؤلات حول متى علم بايدن وأطباؤه بالسرطان، نظراً إلى طبيعته المتقدمة والفحص الطبي المكثف الذي يُجرى للرؤساء الأميركيين، لكن الفحص السنوي لبروتين “بي إس إيه” بعد سن الـ 70 لا يوصى به بشكل عام.
وتنصح الخدمات الوقائية الأميركية بتجنبه، مشيرة إلى أن أخطار النتائج الإيجابية الخاطئة والمضاعفات الناتجة من الخزعات والعلاجات تفوق الفوائد.
وكان بايدن يبلغ ما بين 71 و72 سنة عند خضوعه لهذا الفحص عام 2014.
وسرطان البروستات هو الأكثر شيوعاً لدى الرجال ويمثل 15 في المئة من مجمل أنواع الأمراض السرطانية التي تصيبهم.
وقال خبراء طبيون تحدثت إليهم وكالة الصحافة الفرنسية إن التأخر في تشخيص سرطان متقدم لن يكون أمراً نادراً، حتى بالنسبة إلى رئيس سابق يتلقى رعاية طبية فائقة الجودة.
ولم يتحدث مكتب بايدن عما إذا كان الرئيس السابق قد خضع لفحوص الكشف عن البروستات بصورة منفصلة.
وظلت الشكوك حول الحال الصحية لبايدن تلاحقه طوال حملته الانتخابية، وعادت للظهور مجدداً مع اقتراب صدور كتاب يسرد ما وصفه بتدهور في حاله البدنية.
من جهته، عبر الرئيس السابق أول من أمس الإثنين عن امتنانه لفيض “الحب والدعم” بعد تشخيص إصابته بالسرطان.

Former U.S. President Joe Biden was not diagnosed with prostate cancer prior to last week, nor had he undergone a blood test to screen for the disease in the past 11 years, a spokesperson for Biden announced on Tuesday.
The statement from Biden’s office came after his successor, Donald Trump, alleged a cover-up, claiming he was “surprised” the public had not been informed about the cancer earlier.
On Sunday, Biden’s office disclosed that the 82-year-old former president had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer days after a nodule was detected in his prostate gland.
“President Biden’s last known PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test was in 2014,” his spokesperson said in a statement to AFP, referring to the blood test used for early cancer detection. She added, “Prior to Friday, President Biden had not been diagnosed with prostate cancer.”
Prostate cancer, the most common cancer among men, can be detected in its early stages through PSA blood tests.
Trump, a Republican, has frequently criticized his Democratic rival’s health and cognitive acuity. He and his allies have raised questions about when Biden and his doctors became aware of the cancer, given its advanced nature and the intensive medical examinations U.S. presidents typically undergo. However, annual PSA testing is not generally recommended for men over 70.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advises against routine PSA screening, noting that the risks of false-positive results and complications from biopsies and treatments outweigh the benefits.
Biden was between 71 and 72 years old when he last underwent the test in 2014.
Prostate cancer accounts for 15% of all cancers diagnosed in men. Medical experts consulted by AFP stated that delayed diagnosis of advanced cancer is not uncommon, even for a former president receiving high-quality care.
Biden’s office did not clarify whether he had undergone separate prostate screenings.
Doubts about Biden’s health have persisted throughout his political career and resurfaced recently ahead of the release of a book alleging a decline in his physical condition.
On Monday, the former president expressed gratitude for the “outpouring of love and support” following his cancer diagnosis.
