أكدت نيجيريا أنها تدخلت عسكرياً، أمس الأحد، في بنين بعد محاولة انقلاب قام بها مجموعة ضباط في الدولة المجاورة، وفق ما أكد بيان لمكتب الرئاسة النيجيرية.
وأفاد البيان أن الرئيس النيجيري بولا تينوبو وفي استجابة لطلبين من حكومة بنين، أمر “طائرات مقاتلة تابعة للقوات الجوية النيجيرية بدخول البلاد والسيطرة على المجال الجوي للمساعدة في إخراج المتآمرين الانقلابيين من التلفزيون الوطني ومعسكر أعادوا تجميع صفوفهم فيه”.
وأعلنت حكومة بنين عن إحباطها محاولة إنقلاب.
وقالت نيجيريا، إن وزارة خارجية بنين طلبت “دعماً جوياً نيجيرياً فورياً”، مشيرة إلى “الحاجة الملحة وخطورة الوضع”، إضافة إلى ضرورة حماية النظام الدستوري والمؤسسات الوطنية وأمن السكان.
كما طلبت بنين نشر مقاتلات نيجيرية داخل مجالها الجوي “لعمليات المراقبة والتدخل السريع بتنسيق تقوده بنين”.
وطلبت أيضاً نشر قوات برية نيجيرية “مخصصة للمهام التي وافقت عليها قيادة بنين لدعم حماية المؤسسات الدستورية واحتواء الجماعات المسلحة”.
وأكد تينوبو أن قواته تصرفت في إطار بروتوكول المجموعة الاقتصادية لدول غرب أفريقيا “إيكواس” المتعلق بالديمقراطية والحكم الرشيد.
وأكد في بيانه أن بلاده ساعدت “بتحقيق الاستقرار في دولة مجاورة”.
وكانت مجموعة “إيكواس” أعلنت في وقت سابق عن إرسال جنود من نيجيريا وسيراليون وساحل العاج وغانا إلى بنين للمساعدة في احتواء محاولة الانقلاب.

Nigeria confirmed that it militarily intervened yesterday, Sunday, in Benin following a coup attempt carried out by a group of officers in the neighboring country, as confirmed in a statement from the Nigerian presidency office.
The statement indicated that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, in response to two requests from the government of Benin, ordered “Nigerian Air Force fighter jets to enter the country and control its airspace to assist in expelling the coup conspirators from the national television station and a camp where they had regrouped.”
The government of Benin announced that it had thwarted the coup attempt.
Nigeria stated that Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested “immediate Nigerian air support,” citing the “urgent need and gravity of the situation,” in addition to the necessity of protecting the constitutional order, national institutions, and the security of the population.
Benin also requested the deployment of Nigerian fighter jets within its airspace “for surveillance and rapid intervention operations led by Benin.”
It also requested the deployment of Nigerian ground forces “tasked with missions approved by Benin’s leadership to support the protection of constitutional institutions and contain armed groups.”
Tinubu affirmed that his forces acted within the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocol on democracy and good governance.
He confirmed in his statement that his country helped “in stabilizing a neighboring nation.”
Earlier, ECOWAS announced that it was sending troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, and Ghana to Benin to assist in containing the coup attempt.
