انتقدت الولايات المتحدة مشاركة إيران في مناورات بحرية قبالة سواحل جنوب أفريقيا، معتبرة أنها “غير مقبولة” مع حملة القمع التي تشنها السلطات على الاحتجاجات التي تهز البلاد.
وأبحرت سفن من الصين وإيران وروسيا والإمارات العربية المتحدة إلى المياه قبالة كيب تاون قبل نحو أسبوع، للمشاركة في التدريبات كجزء من مجموعة دول “البريكس”.
وذكرت وسائل إعلام محلية أن حكومة جنوب أفريقيا سعت إلى سحب إيران من التدريبات التي تقودها الصين، التي تجرى وسط حملة قمع في إيران تقول مجموعات حقوقية إنها أسفرت عن مقتل آلاف.
ولم يتضح إلى أي مدى شاركت السفن الإيرانية في التدريبات التي بررتها البحرية الجنوب أفريقية بأنها ضرورية، “لضمان سلامة الممرات الملاحية والنشاطات الاقتصادية البحرية”.
ورأى منتقدون أن هذه المناورات تجمع دولاً لديها خلافات دبلوماسية كبيرة مع الولايات المتحدة، فيما تسعى بريتوريا إلى تحسين علاقاتها المتضررة مع واشنطن.
واعتبرت السفارة الأميركية في جنوب أفريقيا على “فيسبوك” أن “إيران هي جهة مزعزعة للاستقرار وراعية للإرهاب، وإشراكها في التدريبات، بأية قدرات كانت، يقوض الأمن البحري والاستقرار الإقليمي”. وأضافت في بيان “من غير المقبول أن ترحب جنوب أفريقيا بقوات الأمن الإيرانية بينما كانت الأخيرة تطلق النار على مواطنين إيرانيين وتسجنهم وتعذبهم أثناء ممارستهم نشاطاً سياسياً سلمياً ناضل الجنوب أفريقيون بشدة من أجله”، وتابعت السفارة “لا يمكن لجنوب أفريقيا أن تلقي محاضرات على العالم في شأن العدالة بينما تتقرب من إيران”.
وتدهورت العلاقات بين واشنطن وبريتوريا إلى أدنى مستوياتها بسبب خلافات سياسية عدة، من بينها قضية الإبادة الجماعية التي أقامتها جنوب أفريقيا على إسرائيل أمام محكمة العدل الدولية على خلفية حرب غزة.

The United States criticized Iran’s participation in naval exercises off the coast of South Africa, deeming it “unacceptable” given the authorities’ crackdown on protests shaking the country.
Ships from China, Iran, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates sailed into the waters off Cape Town about a week ago to participate in the drills as part of the BRICS group of nations.
Local media reported that the South African government sought to withdraw Iran from the China-led exercises, which are taking place amid a crackdown in Iran that human rights groups say has killed thousands.
It remains unclear to what extent Iranian vessels participated in the drills, which the South African navy justified as necessary “to ensure the safety of maritime routes and marine economic activities.”
Critics viewed these maneuvers as bringing together countries with significant diplomatic differences with the United States, while Pretoria seeks to improve its strained relations with Washington.
The U.S. Embassy in South Africa stated on Facebook that “Iran is a destabilizing actor and a state sponsor of terrorism, and involving it in the exercises, in any capacity, undermines maritime security and regional stability.” It added in a statement, “It is unacceptable for South Africa to welcome Iranian security forces while the latter has been shooting, imprisoning, and torturing Iranian citizens engaged in peaceful political activity—a cause for which South Africans fought hard.” The embassy continued, “South Africa cannot lecture the world on justice while cozying up to Iran.”
Relations between Washington and Pretoria have deteriorated to their lowest point due to several political disagreements, including South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice over the war in Gaza.
