قال أوزجور أوزيل زعيم حزب الشعب الجمهوري، حزب المعارضة الرئيس في تركيا، لـ”رويترز” ضمن مقابلة أمس الأربعاء، إن محاكمة رئيس بلدية إسطنبول المسجون أكرم إمام أوغلو تعد مسألة سياسية بحتة تهدف إلى منعه من منافسة الرئيس رجب طيب أردوغان في الانتخابات المقبلة.
ومثل إمام أوغلو (55 سنة) أمام المحكمة الإثنين الماضي، ضمن الجلسة الافتتاحية لقضية فساد كبيرة تشمل أكثر من 400 متهم على صلة ببلدية إسطنبول.
ويتهم المدعون العامون إمام أوغلو بقيادة منظمة إجرامية بهدف التربح من التلاعب بالمناقصات والرشوة، وهي تهم ينفيها هو وحزبه، الشعب الجمهوري.
وقال أوزيل “دعوني أقل بوضوح. ما يحدث في تركيا ليس محاكمة بالمعنى العادي للكلمة. إنها ليست عملية قانونية بل سياسية”.
وأضاف أن القضاة الذين يتولون القضية كلفوا “ليس بإجراء محاكمة عادلة، بل بإصدار القرار الذي يريده أردوغان”.
وتنفي حكومة أردوغان التأثير في القضاء وتقول إن المحاكم التركية مستقلة.
ويحتجز إمام أوغلو رهن الحبس الاحتياط منذ ما يقارب عام وسط حملة قضائية غير مسبوقة على حزب الشعب الجمهوري، تقول جماعات حقوقية وشخصيات معارضة إنها أضرت بصدقية تركيا كدولة ديمقراطية عضو في حلف شمال الأطلسي.
وقال أوزيل إنه لا يتوقع الإفراج عن إمام أوغلو من الحبس الاحتياط خلال محاكمته، مضيفاً أن الوصول لمثل هذه النتيجة يتطلب ضغطاً اجتماعياً أكبر داخل تركيا، أو ضغطاً دولياً، أو مزيداً من الانخفاض في شعبية أردوغان ضمن استطلاعات الرأي.
وقال أوزيل إن أردوغان يريد إبقاء إمام أوغلو في السجن، لأنه إذا أطلق سراحه فسيتمكن من تنظيم حملة في جميع أنحاء البلاد قبل الانتخابات التي يعتقد زعيم المعارضة أنها ستجرى العام المقبل، قبل الموعد المقرر.
وقال أوزيل “إذا خرج إمام أوغلو، يمكنه السفر في جميع أنحاء تركيا وإطلاق حملة كبيرة. لهذا السبب يريد أردوغان إبقاءه في السجن”.

Ozgur Ozil, leader of the Republican People’s Party, the main opposition party in Turkey, told Reuters in an interview yesterday, Wednesday, that the trial of the imprisoned mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, is a purely political issue aimed at preventing him from competing with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the upcoming elections.
Imamoglu (55 years old) appeared in court last Monday, as part of the opening session of a major corruption case involving more than 400 defendants linked to the Istanbul municipality.
Prosecutors accuse Imamoglu of leading a criminal organization with the aim of profiting from bid rigging and bribery, charges he and his party, the Republican People’s Republic, deny.
Ozil said, “Let me be clear. What is happening in Türkiye is not a trial in the ordinary sense of the word. It is not a legal process, but a political process.”
He added that the judges handling the case were tasked “not with conducting a fair trial, but with issuing the decision that Erdogan wants.”
Erdogan’s government denies influence on the judiciary and says that Turkish courts are independent.
Imamoglu has been held in pretrial detention for nearly a year amid an unprecedented judicial campaign against the Republican People’s Party, which human rights groups and opposition figures say has damaged the credibility of the party.Türkiye as a democratic country is a member of NATO.
Ozil said that he does not expect Imamoglu to be released from pretrial detention during his trial, adding that reaching such a result requires greater social pressure within Turkey, international pressure, or a further decline in Erdogan’s popularity in opinion polls.
Ozil said that Erdogan wants to keep Imamoglu in prison, because if he is released, he will be able to campaign throughout the country before the elections, which the opposition leader believes will be held next year, earlier than scheduled.
Ozil said, “If Imamoglu comes out, he can travel throughout Türkiye and launch a major campaign. That’s why Erdogan wants to keep him in prison.”
